Artemisia Gentileschi, Judith slaying Holofernes, 1614-20.
Artemisja Gentileschi was an Italian baroque painter, she was the first female painter to become a member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence. Before she became a member of Accademia she had a private teacher - painter Agostino Tassi, who raped her when she was 17. She pressed charges against Tassi and he was sentenced to imprisonment for one year. Because of that Artemisia is said to be the first feminist.
For the rest of her life she painted various versions of Judith slaying Holofernes - Holofernes has the face of Tassi.
